Climb a steep, vegetated slope on a faint path, drifting right up and across a gully. Continue up a ramp that becomes stony and bouldery, leading along a brow high above the valley. Head into a side-valley where rivers converge at waterfalls, and ford them upstream. Make a rising traverse across the stony, bouldery slopes of Kollumúlaheiði, touching 800m (2625ft), then drift gradually downwards, looking ahead to spot small tarns in a side-valley. A long and slender waterfall is seen across Vesturdalur. Swing right into the side-valley, crossing streams and rugged spurs between them, to see the large tarn of Kollumúlavatn. The little FÍ hut of Egilssel is perched on a crest above the tarn. The hut is basic, with no showers, and water is from the lake or river.
